Highland 2012 Spring USCSDA Trial

Please come and join us for the 2012 Highland Spring Field Trial. The Trial will be on the 17-18 of March at the Highland field Trial grounds. We will be offering both Open and Amatuer Stakes in Shooting Dog and Derby, also an Open Puppy stake will be offered on a separate coarse with no birds put down. An ad will be in the American Field and also shown here when released.

The Open Shooting Dog will also offer a rotating Trophy, "Founders Cup", this is a rotating trophy started 3yrs. ago honoring the founders of the Highland Field Trial club, it's shaped with dog bowels in a Stanley Cup presentation.

At the Highland Trial, no one goes away hungry, we try very hard to offer High quality food for a simple donation.

Qualifications require a U.S. Complete Amateur Derby or Shooting dog win along with a AFTCA certificate for all handlers and dogs.
Grounds are the beautiful Ionia Field Trial area Home of the Michigan Shooting Dog Championship and a assortment of other National events. It is located just 100 miles south of Gladwin where the Grand National Grouse Ch. will be held prior to this running. Hope some of you along with a southern contingent can participate in this prestigious Championship.

2011 Region #4 Champion Grouse River Ace

Jim Cipponeri would like to thank everyone for coming and supporting the Region 4 A.F.T.C.A. Walking Championship at Highland Trial Grounds.

This last Sunday a Champion was named for the A.F.T.C.A. Region 4 Walking Shooting Dog. Congratulations to Bryan Wood for winning his first Championship with Grouse River Ace, He he had a superb forward race and 2 immaculate finds on the always difficult Highland Course, there was no RU Champion named.,

Derby congrats to Ron Sposita’s Joan Jett, the winner, Bryan Wood for Grouse River Black Jack, second, and Gary Vitali’s Grousringer Stogie for third place. It was a very good trial, managed well by Jim and Connie Cipponeri and well judged by Sandy Maclean and Craig Merlington along with Derby judges Bill Darr and George Crumlich. It was great to see the support given this event by Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania trialers.

Results for the Highland 2011 Fall Trial

Another Trial is in the books for the Highland field trial club this past weekend. The weather was nice and cool which let the dogs perform well. Bird planting was done by Paul Tutro which is always appreciated by the club. The birds were brought up from Illinois dropped off in Ann Arbor, these birds were great flyer's and really make a good trial!

At noon the club broke for lunch and as always people flocked to the pavilion for the Clubs famous lunches, this Fall Ron Sposita made his famous Chicken Baked Comfort dish, which is a dish he uses in his far reach deer camp in northern Michigan. In addition we had Mostacholi from Ron's Dad and Diane Wheelocks World Famous Carrot cake (I did mention World Famous)! Like always the food was received well.

Again, The Highland Field Trial Club would like to thank all for another great trial.

Judging was performed in the Open Shooting Dog stake and Open Derby by Mr. Blake Rizzo, Blake is from the German Shorthair Horseback stakes along with the 3rd Turk Jimmy Cipponeri.

When does the wrangler show up and what does he charge? Can I ride a Horse because of my poor health? I need a good scout too! Are all the fences fixed and did someone get rid off all the coyotes and crazy deer out there?

Start getting those Dogs ready and get out from behind the PC, it's training time for the Fall trial at the Highland Trial grounds September 17-18.
This is a "Michigan Walking Points Series" and will start at 8am each day. The trial will be run on Liberated quail and native birds. Both the Silo and Barn courses will be used, the Open Puppy will be run on the Barn course as there won't be birds put out. Lunch will be served Saturday and like always, it will be a treat!

The Rumor Mill is Spinning and it looks promising for an Updated hand Held for the Garmin Astro dog Tracking system. The Garmin Astro 320 Dog Tracking system is Set to be released.

The Garmin Astro 320 will be based on the Garmin Oregon Platform.

Features of the Garmin Astro 320 will include Touch Screen controls, a larger screen and better Map Controls.

We expect the New Astro 320 to also be compatible to Garmin’s Birds Eye Satellite Imaging maps which are by subscription of 30 dollars per year.
We’ll try and keep you posted with any news or other features that we hear about.

Keep watching this Site for the Latest information about the Garmin Astro 320 system. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out what it will entail.

Garmin expects the Price of the Astro 320 with a DC40 collar to be the same prices that the DC40 combo’s are right now. $649 retail.

We would also expect the Prices of the DC40 combo’s with a 220 Handheld to drop to the Current DC30 prices.. $599 retail.

DC30′s are expected to End sales in March or April.

Highland FTC Spring 2011 Report and Winners

The Highland Field Trial Club would like to thank everyone who attended the spring 2011 USCSDA Trial. The Highland FTC was blessed again with good running weather and also "no snow".

The Trial started out sharp at 8:00am on Silo course Saturday morning with Judges Dave Heavlin and Paul Renilus mounted and ready for there judging duties for the next 2 days. They did a great job and was highly praised by handlers and owners, again thank you Dave and Paul for your services and helping the Highland Field Trial Club.

Breakfast was presented each morning by the club, which was just short of the classic breakfast of champions (Doughnuts and coffee), oh Bob Wheelock picked the doughnuts each morning from Tim Hortons of Milford, Mi.

The order for Saturdays running for the Silo course was Open Shooting Dog and then Open Derby. The Open Shooting Dog finished in time, but 2 braces of the Open Derby was left for Sunday morning, (we just ran out of day light). The Judge who subbed for the Derby with Dave Heavlin was Mike Brown who was kind enough to return the next day, which was a last minute decision, again the Highland FTC thanks you! Just a reminder- The Highland Field Trial club will be having the 2011 Spring Trial on March 19-20. We will provide more formal information in a week or so. Like last year we will be trying to offer a Shooting Dog Qualifier Sunday the 20th and a not we will be running the Puppy on coarse #2 (Barn) where there will be no birds planted.

Again, please keep watching for details and also our add in the American Field.

On another note this past Saturday the Highland club took part in the Volunteer day stewardship program whichappitiht is a way to improve the grounds by removing invasive species of plants and trees. The goal is to return the grounds to the Oak Savannah's with the prairie grasses.

The Highland Club cannot wait to see you all. Oh and remember to bring a big appetite!

Excellent weather,food and scenting conditions. Numerous quality performances punctuated by camaraderie and sportsmanship. The grounds were beautiful but very challenging. There was more bird work than ever before, a testimony to the habitat program and our bird planter Paul Tutro. A lot of new and also familiar faces. Thanks to all those who attended and contributed in so many ways.

Highland Fall 2010 Trial this past weekend had another great attendance. The Highland Field Trial Club would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the club. We had a great time as always and were glad to see familar faces and also new faces.

Hope to see everyone at the Highland Field Trial Clubs Fall Trail, held on September 18-19.

These trials are all walking trial format under the USCSDA standards. The weather for this weekend promises to be cooler and we are hoping to get a nice draw. There was some corrections to the ad in the American Field so please read below.

The Highland Club wishes to see everyone for support, Oh did I mention the world class meals!

The Highland Field Trial Club will hold it's Fall event at Highland Recreation Area near Highland Michigan, September 18-19. The American Field Ad has appeared, but there is a correction that needs to be mention. The Saturday stakes are Open Shooting Dog, Open Derby and Open Puppy. The Open Shooting Dog Qualifier is listed as Saturday with a purse but that stake will run on Sunday with no purse, time permitting.

The Sunday stakes stakes are Amateur Shooting Dog, and Amateur Derby (time permitting) and aforementioned Qualifier.

The Michigan Open Shooting Dog CH.
will begin on Wednesday this week April 21st to conclusion at the Ionia Field Trial grounds in Ionia Michigan.

This year the Championship drew 70 dogs to the line. If you get a chance and want to see some of the top Horseback dogs in the country, please stop on by and either bring your horse, rent a horse or have a ride in the tractor driven dog wagon around a 12 mile continuous coarse.

The rain held out, there was a little wind but another successful trial was put on at the famous Ionia Field Trial grounds by Jim Cipponeri and crew of the Grand Valley FTC.

This year Jim couldn't ride a horse so he learned better deligation and Napoleonic pointing ability and amazingly to everyones eyes it worked.

Highland 2010 Spring Draw Sheet

Saturday & Sunday March 20 & 21, 8 AM sharp each morning.
We will run stakes in the order posted. Highland Field Trial Area, main headquarters at the Silo course. Puppy to run at the Barn Course on Saturday following the start of the Open Shooting dog. We have 93 dogs entered this weekend. We are going to need to run on schedule, keep things moving, need cooperation from all the handlers. Please be ready to run your brace. We have 12 hours of daylight each day (we need to plant birds each morning) We thank all in advance for their help.
Lunch will be served each day. The cost of lunch is not included in the entry fee. Please donate, there will be a can located right next to the plates. Thank you in advance. We advertised an Open Shooting Dog qualifier (at the discretion of the club) If we run this stake we will draw the stake following the completion of the Open Shooting Dog or Saturday evening. The running order for this stake will not be posted.

Region 4 AFTCA Shooting Dog Championship was held this past weekend at the Highland Field Trial Grounds, in Highland, Michigan September 19-20 under very warm conditions. The draw for the trial was 30 dogs from Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsilvania and Canada. The Champion winner of the event was Duke's Bella Dancer, pictured above, owned/handled by Ron Sposita of Milford Michigan.

The Runner-Up Champion was Texas Copper Top, owned and handled by Kevin Klein, pictured below.

USCSDA Horseback Scouting revisited

After some questions concerning horseback scouting in USCSDA Trials:

AT THE DIRECTION OF THE JUDGES-
The scout riding an edge or a particularly dense piece of cover, AT THE DIRECTION OF THE JUDGES, is perfectly acceptable.
The scout heeling the dog back to the front is NOT.

Please remind your Judges, Handlers, and Scouts about the rules governing Horseback Scouting!!

I continue to receive complaints regarding the abuse of Horseback Scouting. It's pretty simple:

1. Scouts dispatched with Judges permission.

2. Scouts can go to a specific area to look for a dog and then returns to the gallery - OUTRIDING IS NOT PERMITTED.

3. A SCOUT IS NOT ALLOWED TO HANDLE THE DOG IN ANY MANNER.

4. Scouting is either done on foot or on horseback. USE OF 4-WHEELER IS NOT PERMITTED.

Let's get a handle on this, before someone loses credit for a placement!

Use of Garmin GPS in US Complete Trials

News from the USCSDA message board

Last week I stated that the Garmin was authorized in all US Complete Trials - Open and Amateur Stakes. This was based on the American Field's authorization and not having seen anything official from the AFTCA prohibiting its use. This is not entirely true. After conferring with Linda Hunt, AFTCA Secretary, the AFTCA has NOT approved its use in trials held by its member clubs. A noticefrom the AFTCA will be published in the American

Field shortly.

What does this mean to US Complete Trials?

1. The Garmin DC-30 is approved for use in Open Stakes for the trial period specified by the American Field.

2. The Garmin DC-30 is NOT approved for use in Amateur Stakes conducted by clubs that are members of the AFTCA.

3. The Garmin DC-30 may be used in any stakes conducted by USCSDA Clubs that are not members of the AFTCA, for the trial period specified by the American Field.

4. The Garmin DC-30 is NOT approved for use in the USCSDA National Amateur Championship, since this is an AFTCA sanctioned trial.

Sorry for any inconvience. Hopefully this clears up any confusion.

Fellow friends of the Highland Field Trial grounds, help is needed to keep the gounds in tip top shape. This is an on going process, which involves all individuals that use the grounds for trials or training needs.

We have included a list of dates, which were pulled off the Volunteer Match site. These dates will help the Highland Grounds clear invasive shrubs like buckthorn and autumn olive, also volunteers will be hauling and piling brush and stacking fire wood.

Please make a note to mention that you are with the Highland field Trial Club, when volunteering your time for the grounds, as our club gets credit for the hours which are volunteered.

Join ongoing efforts to restore this area to open grassland. Volunteers will be hauling and piling brush and stacking fire wood. Meet at the Barn Field Trial Area parking lot on the north side of Cooley Lake Road between Duck Lake and Beaumont Roads.

These workday activities are not suitable for children 12 or under. An adult must accompany children between the ages of 13 and 16.

We will post more info as the first trial comes together.
This is an American Field sanctioned, US Complete Shooting Dog Association (http://www.uscomplete.org/) sanctioned, walking trial. We will run the Shooting Dog and Derby at the Silo course and will use the Barn course for Puppy stake. We run 2 trials per year, March 14 & 15 this year, weekend 11 and Sept 12 & 13, weekend 37. We will request the same weekends each year. We will be paying purses in the Open events, along with Rosettes. Amateurs stakes will be given Rosettes.

We would love to see entries from all the pointing breeds and the Amateur Shooting Dog stake would be a great stake for folks new to AF field trials to enter, compete and enjoy what we do in this format. If you want to review the rules, again go to the US Complete Web site and review the rules for this format.

The club is a member of the Association of Michigan Field Trial Clubs and all of our stakes will qualify for Michigan Walking Dog of the Year standings. Additionally, as a sanctioned club with US Complete, points will be earned for US Complete Dog and Hander of the year in both Open and Amateur and also the US Complete Invitational Championship.

The Highland Field Trial Club will run its first trial March 14-15, 2009 at the Highland Field Trial grounds in Highland, MI. This will be a U.S. Complete walking trial. Stakes to be run: Open Shooting Dog, Open Derby, Open Puppy, Amateur Shooting Dog. An Amateur Derby will be run time permitting.

Membership levels were discussed at the recent meeting of officers and directors.
Levels being- Founder: $200.00, Life: $100.00, and Yearly: $30.00 -Founding members will receive a Life Membership, name on Club stationary as Founding Member, Club embroidered cap, and free lunch at all trials held by Club. Founding membership deadline is March 15, 2009. -Lifetime membership will receive a Club embroidered cap. -Yearly membership is just that. All are welcome to join and support this new Club.

Highland Field Trial Club Spring date: March 14-15

Dates are set for the first Spring Trial for the Highland Field Trial Club.
The date for the spring trial will be March 14-15 of 2009. Please stay tuned for further details.

USCSDA-Wayne County Coonhunters trial, Wooster Ohio

It was a VERY VERY COLD morning November 23rd, the country side of Wooster Ohio.
The trial was held using the US Complete format.
The judges were bundled and ready to go at 7:30am with a temp of 8 degrees F.
The trial was running like a clock, everyone was ready at the line, so there wasn’t a delay.

South of the Border Training - No No, I mean North

Normally when you see these Trucks you are quite a bit farther South. On a recent training exercise in the Beautiful UP of Michigan, one can experience protection and inspection from our Homeland Security, this just adds to the Fauna Flora for this time of the year.

Highland Field Trial Grounds Work Day

There were 10 workers that showed up to pile brush that MDNR crews left when clearing open spaces on the Silo course.

Ron Sposita, Greg Tereck, and Paul Tutro came to represent the Association of Michigan Field Trial Clubs.

Ron presented the info for this new club at the Association of Michigan Field Trial Clubs annual summer meeting on July 20. The club was heartily accepted into the fold. US Complete has also accepted us. The Michigan Association will now add a yearly Walking Shooting Dog, Walking Derby & Walking Puppy of the Year award. The Kalamazoo Field Trial Club, The Southwest Michigan Field Trial Club and the Grand Valley Field Trial Club all run walking events at Ionia, Highland & Allegan. (If I left off a club that runs walking events I apologize.) With this new club we now have enough walking events (less Coverdog which has a yearly awards) to have Dog of the Year awards. As stated we are still working out the details for the club, By Laws, dates, etc. As of this writing we are targeting a mid March spring trial and a mid September Fall trial (prior to the bird opener.) We will not overlap the Gladwin Cover trials and we will attempt to not overlap with other similar trial formats. We are shooting to have our first trial next March, 2009. We plan to hold Open events for certain and Amateur events if time and entries allow. More to follow as this Club evolves. All are welcome to come on board and work to get this club up and running. We need seed money to get started and as stated in the above we are putting together membership levels to do this. All input and help will be accepted with open arms and open minds.Thanks

At a nightspot well known to field trialers ….the Red Dog Saloon in Milford, Michigan a new walking field trial club was formed July 10, by a panel of six well seasoned field trial devotees. The name chosen for the new venture was the Highland Field Trial Club, and the aim is to hold top notch walking field trials at the Highland Recreation Area near Milford, Michigan. Named president was Ron Sposita, vice president Mark Beniak, Secretary/Treasurer Dave Fletcher and Directors Greg Tereck, Paul Tutro and Bob Wheelock. Much discussion took place including dates for spring and fall events that would not conflict with other field trial clubs, affiliation with the Association of Michigan Field Trial Clubs, insurance for events, liason with the American Field and Field Dog Stud Book and AFTCA, options such as affiliation with US Complete Shooting Dog Association, establishing the club as a 501-C-3 non profit entity with the IRS, getting a tax ID number and opening a bank account, coming up with enough seed money to fund the early expenses of our first trial before income becomes available. At future meetings we will discuss other forms of membership besides our original six voting members. Memberships such as lifetime, Founding Membership, etc will be discussed to help the new club financially and get us rolling, and this information will be put on the web.
